Citrus fruits such as orange, lemon and grapefruit, cause direct irritation of the surface lining the esophageal lumen and Increased relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter resulting in heartburn.
However, if esophageal acid monitoring test is negative, that means acid is not the main factor irritating the esophagus. Bile acids would then contribute to reflux symptoms and grapefruit may have no irritating effect.
I suffer very severely from G.E.R.D. and I do not like to use medications so here are a few remedies that I use all the time and work like a charm.
When I wake up in the morning I drink a cup of home made tea. For the tea you want to use honey to sweeten because it has healing properties and can help relieve anything that has gone wrong during the night. The type of tea should be green but orange teas will not hurt, but green tea also has healing properties.
Next if I am having an issue during the day such as nausea, heartburn, or sore throat I either drink a table spoon of honey to coat and heal the esophagus or a combination of Molasses and olive oil. For the Molasses and Olive oil you will drink the molasses first which will again coat the esophagus and help to heal it plus it is high in nutrients, then you ingest the olive oil to coat the molasses to aid the next time you eat. Be careful the first time you use the olive oil, it can cause you to became nauseous if you are not use to it in you everyday diet.
Also Cough Drops are very good if it is a minor irritation of the esophagus.
At night it is recommended to avoid eating unless it is either honey as a final coat if you think you need it, or half an apple which is rumored to help reduce the amount of night time refluxing.
Below you will see where i got some of this from but the rest i have discovered on my own.
