15 Responses to “What is the best foods to eat to help acid reflux?”
I went on the South Beach diet to loose a few pounds. I wanted to try it b/c a coworker had good results. I was surprised that my acid reflux almost completely went away. I was taking antacids and zantac everyday and waking up in the middle of the night with terrible pain. I started the diet in January and it cleared up with in days. Now the only time I get it is when I eat unhealthy foods like burgers and fast food.
I have the same problem. I find this helps:
Cut out coffee.
Don’t eat allot of citrus’s fruit. (i.e Oranges, lemon.)
Drink allot of milk.
Try not to eat fried food or food like burgers and fatty food.
Don’t eat late at night.
Drink a glass of milk before you go to bed.
I hope I’ve helped you.
I did EVERYTHING right and still needed to use a prescription. What I was told to try first was:
- Eat small portions…and I DO mean SMALL.
- Cut out ALL salts, citrus, acids, caffeine, fats.
- Do NOT eat anything the least bit spicy. All hot stuff is off-limits.
- Do NOT eat diary products in an attempt to quell acid…your stomach only makes more.
- If the acid is really bad, eat 1/2 slice of white bread.
- Don’t eat anything containing high quantities of potassium (bananas especially) 1/2 hour to 45 minutes prior to exercising.
- Sleep on your left side.
- Do NOT eat within 3 hours of bed.
- Do NOT over-use antacids. Again your stomach will just make more acid in response to the neutralization of the acid.
- Do NOT drink carbonated beverages or anything “Yeasty” (especially beer).
- Look at your other medications…often they instigate and exacerbate the problem (BCPs for example in women are a BIG culprit).
If you don’t see an improvement within 2-3 weeks, you may need to consider professional care.
ok I am not an expert on acid reflux.. but here is a thought… battery hen eggs (the kind you find in grocery store) are acidic… where as free range (eggs are fresher and chickens on a better diet) are actually alkhid.. as such I would suggest switching to free range eggs..
my husband found this out while doing research for cancer prevention – he learned that cancers CAN NOT survive in an alkhid body… as such we now have our own free range hens laying yummy eggs for us – which is the best option – but if not you can look around and find somebody who sells them (farmers markets even)… some stores do sell free range eggs, which will be better than battery hen eggs BUT wont be as fresh as from the farm…
dont be fooled by color – the color of an egg is dependant on the kind of chicken laying them – brown eggs do not guarantee its free range.. and white eggs do not always mean its battery hen eggs…
Avoid all spicy foods, food with too much salt
and any food that is naturally spicy. Stick to a bland diet and use Galvagon for your acid reflux.
This is the only OTC that touches acid reflux.
Try not drinking much liquid with your meals, they say that helps your food digest better because, the stomach acids don’t get watered down.If you have something to drink room temp water is the best, cold iced drinks inhibit stomach acid production. Also try for more raw vegetables with your meals to aid in the fiber content. Meat is hard to digest, try baked chicken with minimal seasoning. Caffiene & chocolate can really irritate too.

I would also suggest making sure that you look at any other medications you are taking. Advil & Aleve for pain can be irritants. Eat several hours before you go to bed. Don’t snack right before bed. When sleeping, make sure that you are elevated by 2 pillows, so your not lying flat. Hope these suggestions help! You might also check with your Dr. to see if a possible change in your presciption med is needed. Good luck!!
2 Tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with mother from the health food store and 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda mixed into it. Wait until it stops fizzling then pour 8 oz of water and drink it on an empty stomach. I have used this for quite awhile and it works for me.
You may need to take up to like (3) 40 mg of Nexium a day or you may have a hernia that need repaired. See a specialist about this, not just a regular doctor.
Do you eat less than 5 hours before going to bed? Do you eat and lie on the couch watching TV? These could be causing the problem. Stay off spicy foods at dinner.
mix some 7-up/sprite with some milk and drink. Sounds gross, but isn’t bad. It will make your heartburn go away. Try staying away from acidic foods and grease.
It is a bit easyier to point out what you should not eat.
I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!
Three part answer information, what not to do, and what to do!
INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, or can be Hereditary
The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.
WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:
Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.
I would also look to putting Cinnamon in you diet, it has been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.
Change your diet to alkaline, eat fresh papaya, take enzymes before you eat and after, lots of fresh water, start taking acidolphis caps several times a day and dont drink any alcohol or eat spicy anything…give your stomach a chance to heal. Eating candied ginger helps alot to ease the pain, and if you stay on a alkaline diet ( go to yahoo and type in alkaline diet to get several webpages with recipes and food guidelines) you will feel relief fast, I would get a juicer and cleanse with a juice fast. you will be well in no time at all…
You may want to be checked for gal stones in your gal bladder, sometimes acid reflux can be related to this or be mistaken for it. If the pain comes every time you eat something greasy or high in fat and it becomes so painful you feel like you’re abdomen is being torn up, You may have gal stones and should have your gal bladder removed. If it is not that, I would try taking prilosec. and changing your diet, and stay away from all greasy and high fat content foods.
